HOW TO CUT ON THE COST OF FLAT-ROOF DESIGN

Client A:  I like flat roofed designs very much but when I remember              the cost of doing  another slab up there I shrink. Because              another slab calls for those “pillars” to support it hence                   more metal bars {chumas}.
Arch Dann:  You don’t have to use a slab up there to do a flat-roof and no columns (pillars) are needed.
Client A     : Wow! how do we go about that sir? Comb me kindly.
Arch DannIn many occasions doing a flat becomes even cheaper than a pitched                           roof. We use normal sheets gently sloping but hide them with a parapet                       wall.
Client A   : That’s greek to me sir, can you illustrate with a photo?Arch Dann:  Sure, here we go…

Client A:    wow that’s awesome, and where does the water go? Does                it not accumulate up there?
Arch Dann:    No it does not , we use a gutter between the parapet wall and the                                  roof.

I hope the pics make it clear now..right?

Client A: Yes sure, thanks so much sir…one more question, how do you            direct the water to the tank let’s say you are harvesting it?

Arch Dann:  Simple; just like water from a normal gutter, see the pic below…

Client A: Wow! It’s so clear now, do you have house you have done                  with this kind of design so far and where?

Arch Dann: Yeah sure..along Kenyatta road…

The bungalow I used first is in progress in Kisii.

There is still another way you can decide to hide the roof without using a parapet wall all through like my other design below in Nyeri.. We gently slope it inside.

ClientA: You said a flat-roof can be cheaper than pitched roof, kindly             explain how.

Arch Dann:  Thanks for asking, in a pitched roof; the beauty lies more on the roof                           so you will tend to use those high end decra-roofing for beauty but in a                      flat-roof, the roof is hidden so you will end-up using the normal                                  corrugated iron sheets.

Client A: How about that wall hiding the roof?
Arch Dann:  Pitched roof have gables that support it, those are wall extensions..see                         the pic  below..

The pitch of the house above is only 25degrees and the distance between Apex A to B is 2.4M and BC also 2.4M. This house has almost four such extensions. You can see how simple that roof is, how about those high pitched complex roofs, how many such extensions do you get? In a flat-roof we just distribute the extensions evenly to around four courses. You might end up using lesser stones.

Client A: I really like your works sir; I would like you to design for me            this kind of a house,  how can someone reach out to you?
Arch Dann: Welcome anytime madam…you can reach me out through

  3. Excellent post. Very eye opening. Always thought flat roof had to be concrete! Definitely looking forward to implementing this on a maisonette. It will also enable me to harvest water for drinking if I use plain corrugated sheets
